Royals designate Guillen for assignment

08/05/2010 - Seattle, WA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Kansas City Royals designated outfielder Jose Guillen for assignment on Thursday to make room for the team's younger players to receive more playing time.
Guillen, 34, was in the midst of his third season with the Royals and was batting .255 with 16 homers and 62 RBI in 106 games. The team now has 10 days to trade, release or assign Guillen to the minor leagues.
Guillen's three-year, $36 million contract signed prior to the 2008 season is set to expire at the end of this year. If he is released, any team that adds him to its roster is required to pay only the prorated portion of the veteran's minimum salary for the remainder of the season, with the Royals picking up the rest of the tab.
With the Royals out of the playoff race -- 15 1/2 games behind first-place Chicago entering Thursday's play -- the team wants to give more playing time to its younger players, such as Kila Ka'aihue, who has appeared in just 16 games in his career.
To replace Guillen on the roster, the Royals recalled pitcher Philip Humber from Triple-A Omaha. Humber, a former Mets and Twins farmhand who was part of the deal that sent Johan Santana to New York, has yet to appear in a major league game with the Royals. In his 18-game career over four seasons, Humber has no record with a 6.07 earned run average.

So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.
In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
