Woods in the hunt at PGA after a 71

08/12/2010 - Kohler, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tiger Woods birdied his last hole on Thursday to shoot a one-under 71 in the first round of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.
Woods failed to break par in any of his four rounds last week at the WGC- Bridgestone Invitational, a tournament he won seven times, and posted his worst finish as a professional.
Thursday was certainly different in the last major of the season and Woods is already close to the lead.
Woods, a four-time PGA Champion, is three shots behind Bubba Watson and Italy's Francesco Molinari, who both posted rounds of four-under 68 on Thursday.
"That's the way it goes. I mean, everyone has bad weeks," said Woods. "Welcome to golf. It is what it is. Guys shoot 59 and don't win. Fickle game."
Jason Day, the young Australian who won this year's Byron Nelson, and Ryan Moore both carded three-under 69s.
Phil Mickelson is in the afternoon wave of tee times, but birdied his first hole.
Woods and the whole field had to wait a little over three hours to start the 92nd PGA Championship. Heavy fog rolled over Whistling Straits, so the first round won't be completed until Friday morning.
Woods, who started on the 10th tee, flew out of the gate on Thursday with three birdies in his first four holes. He shared the lead until an errant drive at the 15th cost him a stroke.
After the bogey at 15, Woods appeared to regress back to his look of last week. He'd hit poor shots and immediately chase after them. Once, Woods' driver flew out of his hands after impact and the result was bogeys at the par-five second and the par-three seventh.
Woods was even-par for the championship, but hit a strong approach shot six feet from the stick at the ninth. He drained the birdie putt to get into red figures for the round.
"I played too good not to shoot under par, and it would have been very disappointing and frustrating to end up at even par as well as I played today," acknowledged Woods.
Woods hasn't won a major in 2010, a year he'd likely soon forget. He tied for fourth at both the Masters and U.S. Open, but hasn't come close to contention since Pebble Beach.
Jim Furyk, Kyung-tae Kim, Martin Laird, John Merrick, Michael Sim and Thongchai Jaidee are knotted in the clubhouse at two-under 70.
Defending champion Y.E. Yang had an even-par 72 playing with Woods on Thursday.

In part two of MySportsbook.com’s draft preview, we’ll take a look at a division that was extremely disappointing last season: the NFC South. Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC. The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game. For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft. Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.
1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign? New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1. Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT. Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers

With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round. LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems. If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub. High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career. With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

Age really caught up to the Bucs last season. The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age. It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot. This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.
